Vregille is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Vregille is located at an altitude of 218 m above sea level, about 13 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, in the valley plain of the Ognon , which draws a wide river bend to the south here, opposite Moncley , south of the Monts de Gy .
The area of the 4.28 km² municipal area includes a section of the lower Ognon valley. The southern border always runs along the Ognon. This flows here with a large bend in the river through an alluvial plain that is around two kilometers wide and averages 210 m. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the valley level to the adjacent plateau, which is made up of tertiary sediments . The plateau is partly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. At 277 m in the far north at the foot of the Monts de Gy, the highest point of Vregille is reached. The western boundary runs along the Ruisseau de Poussot , which flows into the Ognon a little below Vregille.
Neighboring municipalities of Vregille are Gézier-et-Fontenelay in the north, Chambornay-lès-Pin and Sauvagney in the east, Moncley in the south and Pin in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Vregille belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Châtillon-le-Duc held local rule . Together with Franche-Comté , Vregille finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. From the 17th century to 1789, Vregille belonged to the Courlet family, who had a castle built here. Since 2002, the municipality has been a member of the Communauté de communes de la Vallée de l'Ognon, comprising 15 localities .
Attractions
The village church of Vregille was built at the beginning of the 18th century. The castle originally dates from the early 18th century, but was later redesigned several times. It served as a military hospital in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War. Today it houses a small museum.

With 174 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Vregille is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the number of inhabitants had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (132 people were still counted in 1886), strong population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Vregille was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.
The place is off the major thoroughfare near a department road that leads from Étuz to Marnay . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 13 kilometers away.
