Menoux is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Menoux is located at an altitude of 235 m above sea level, five kilometers north of Faverney and about 21 kilometers north-northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, in a hollow of the Fossé de la Marcelle, south of the heights of Saint-Remy.

The area of ​​the 14.70 km² municipal area comprises a section in the gently undulating landscape east of the upper Saône valley . The central part of the area is taken up by the basin of the Fossé de la Marcelle , which provides drainage to the south to the lantern . It is at an average of 230 m. The hollow is flanked by a plateau that rises slightly to the north. Agricultural use predominates here, there are larger forest areas along the municipal boundaries. The southern boundary is formed by the Bois de Revreuge and the Bois de la Raie . To the northwest and north are the heights of Saint-Remy. At 335 m, the highest point in Menoux is reached here. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the terrain consists of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments, which were mainly deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). In some places shell limestone from the Triassic comes to light.

Neighboring municipalities of Menoux are Saint-Rémy-en-Comté in the north, Cubry-lès-Faverney in the east, Mersuay and Faverney in the south and Amance and Senoncourt in the west.

history

Remains of one from Gallo-Roman times indicate a very early settlement of the place. In addition, a cemetery and weapons from the Merovingian period (6th and 7th centuries) were discovered. Menoux was first mentioned in a document towards the end of the 9th century under the name Manaore . Two pilgrims from Aquitaine were killed here in the 8th century. In the Middle Ages Menoux belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of ​​the Bailliage d'Amont . During the Thirty Years War, the place was totally destroyed by French troops in 1636. Together with Franche-Comté , Menoux finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Menoux is a member of the communal association Communauté de communes de la Saône Jolie, which comprises 16 localities .

The Saint-Julien church originally dates from the 15th / 16th centuries. Century (choir room with remains of wall paintings), but was largely rebuilt in the 18th century. The remarkable interior includes altars (17th century), a richly carved pulpit (18th century) and various statues. Other attractions include a 16th century house and an 18th century mansion. The place has two lavoirs (19th century) that once served as a wash house and cattle trough.

With 301 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Menoux is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (513 people were counted in 1881), slight population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Menoux was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, viticulture and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Faverney to Saint-Rémy-en-Comté . There are further road connections with Amance and Cubry-lès-Faverney .
