Vellefaux is a French commune in the Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the canton of Montbozon and the Chanois municipal association .
geography
Vellefaux is located between Vallerois-Lorioz in the northeast and Échenoz-le-Sec in the southwest, seven kilometers south of Vesoul on European route 23 ( RN 57 ).
history
Vellefaux has existed since Gallo-Roman times , it was on the Roman road from Besançon ( Vesontio ) to Luxeuil-les-Bains ( Luxovium ). In the 11th century, the Seigneurs of Vellefaux supported the monastery in Luxeuil-les-Bains. Jean de Vellefaux, Guillaume de Vellefaux (1139) and Hugues de Vellefaux (1302) were mentioned in a document. Hugues de Vellefaux was married to Mahaut d'Arbois, a great niece of Louis IX. of France (1214-1270). In 1475 the heiress of the fief , Marguerite de Vellefaux, married Antoine de Grammont-Fallon, whose grave slab can still be seen in the pastorate's garden .
In 1586 the town was ravaged by the plague . In the course of the Thirty Years' War , Swedish troops set fire to Vellefaux in 1636.

Attractions
The old castle in Vellefaux has existed since the 13th century. The foundations, parts of the house, parts of the pigeon house , remains of a tower and a gate have been preserved. Two chimneys are from the 18th century and traces of another chimney from the 16th century have been preserved. In 1989 the castle was entered in the additional directory of the Monuments historiques ( inscrit MH ).
