Champtonnay is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Champtonnay is located at an altitude of 219 m above sea level, nine kilometers southeast of Gray and about 32 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, in the plain of Gray, in the valley of the Tenise at the confluence of the Ruisseau de Venère .
The area of the 5.24 km² municipal area comprises a section of the gently undulating landscape between the valley plains of Saône in the north and Ognon in the south. From east to west, the area is crossed by the Tenise valley, which drains the river into the Saône and is a maximum of one kilometer wide. The valley is flanked on both sides by the plateau, which extends west of the Monts de Gy and averages 235 m. It is subdivided by the valleys of various short side streams of the Tenise, including the Ruisseau de Venère . The plateau is made up of sediments from the Tertiary and Cretaceous periods and is partly used for agriculture, partly as a forest. In the west, the municipality reaches into the Bois de la Fiolle and to the southwest to a crest of the Bois d'Arsans . The highest point of Champtonnay is reached here at 259 m.
Neighboring communities of Champtonnay are Cresancey in the north, Onay in the east, Venère and Valay in the south and Arsans and Noiron in the west.
history
The remains of a Roman traffic route indicate an early settlement of the area. Champtonnay was first mentioned in a document in 1267. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule went to the von Scey family in 1417 and to the Perrenot family in 1538. Together with Franche-Comté , Champtonnay finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
Champtonnay Church was built in the 18th century. Ruins of the medieval manor house (12th century) have been preserved. Other sights include the former brickworks (first half of the 19th century) and the covered lavoir, which once served as a wash house and cattle trough.

With 101 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Champtonnay is one of the smallest communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (141 people were still counted in 1886), slight population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
For a long time Champtonnay was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D67 road from Gray to Besançon. Further road connections exist with Valay and Onay.
