Clans is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Clans is located at an altitude of 225 m above sea level, about nine kilometers west-southwest of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, slightly elevated on the western edge of the Baignotte valley, at the western foot of the heights that rise between the river valleys of Saône and Ognon .

The area of the 4.37 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the upper Saône basin. The eastern border runs along the Baignotte, which flows with several turns through a valley to the north to the Durgeon . From the course of the river, the community area extends westward over a slope that is subdivided by several side valleys of the Baignotte, to the adjacent plateau. This plateau consists of tertiary sediments . Agricultural use predominates here, but there are also larger areas of forest, including the Grand Bois in the west and the Bois du Chânois in the south. The highest elevation of clans is reached here at 257 m.

Neighboring communities of clans are Boursières in the north, Velle-le-Châtel in the east, Baignes and Raze in the south and Aroz in the west.

history

Various finds indicate that the area was already populated in Gallo-Roman times. In the Middle Ages, Clans belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and within it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In the 18th century, the lords of Broissia and Bauffremont ruled the village. Today Clans is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Combes, which comprises 22 villages . Clans does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Velle-le-Châtel.

Attractions

Local attractions include a Calvaire dating back to 1722 and several fountains from the 19th century.

With 106 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Clans is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (196 people were still counted in 1881), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Clans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Vesoul agglomeration.

The place is off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Vesoul to Fresne-Saint-Mamès . Another road connection is with Boursières.
