Cenans is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Cenans is located at an altitude of 240 m above sea level , six kilometers southwest of Montbozon and about 21 kilometers south of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the valley of the Ognon , on the southeast edge of the forests of the Grands Bois .

The area of the 5.02 km² large municipal area covers a section of the middle Ognon Valley. The southern part of the area is occupied by the alluvial plain of the Ognon (an average of 230 m), which flows here in an arc extending to the north through an approximately one kilometer wide lowland. Parts south of the current course of the river also belong to cenans. To the north, the terrain rises to a plateau averaging 260 m. This plateau consists of limestone layers from the Upper Jurassic period and is partly covered with arable land and meadow, partly with forest. In the east it is limited by the valley of the lower Linotte . On the heights of the Grands Bois, the highest point of Cenans is reached at 293 m.

The hamlet and parish of Guiseuil (235 m) belongs to Cenans, which lies in an arch of the Linotte just before its confluence with the Ognon. Neighboring communities of Cenans are Loulans-Verchamp in the north and east, Germondans in the south and Beaumotte-Aubertans in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Cenans belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 2000, Cenans has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Montbozon, which comprises 21 localities .

Attractions

The church, which was rebuilt in the 18th century and serves as a parish church in five surrounding villages, is located in the hamlet of Guiseuil. It has rich furnishings from the 18th century and the Vierge de Pitié statue (16th century).

With 141 inhabitants (2004), Cenans is one of the smallest communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (212 people were still counted in 1886), only slight fluctuations were recorded for a long time. Only in the last few years has the population increased again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Cenans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. In the meantime, the place has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Loulans-Verchamps to Cirey . Another road connection is with Avilley .
