history

Renaucourt was first mentioned in 1060 as Rainaldi curtis in a chronicle of the Bèze monastery. Later the names Regnacourt , Regnaulcourt and Renaucour appeared . The place name is derived from the Germanic personal name Rainald and the old French word cortem (court). In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The sovereignty of the area was incumbent on the lords of Fouvent , while the local rule was held by the noble family of Lavoncourt. The place was plundered and pillaged by troops of the Duke of Zweibrücken in 1569. Together with Franche-Comté , Renaucourt finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. A blast furnace was in operation from 1775 to 1867. Today Renaucourt is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 localities .

Attractions

The Saint-Valentin church was built in neo-Gothic style in 1855 and has rich furnishings from the 19th century and remarkable painted glass windows. The lavoir, which once served as a wash house and cattle trough, dates from the same year as the church. A three-arched stone bridge (19th century) leads over the Gourgeonne. Nearby is a Calvaire , which was built in 1620. East of the Gourgeonne is the "Château" (18th century), once the home of the owner of the forge.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (272 people were counted in 1881), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Since the 18th century, the economic life of the village was shaped by the iron and steel works. Today there are some local small businesses, especially in the agricultural machinery and precision engineering sectors. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Lavoncourt to Pisseloup. Further road connections exist with Volon, Villers-Vaudey, Fleurey-lès-Lavoncourt and Mont-Saint-Léger.
