Vaite is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vaite is located at an altitude of 205 m above sea level, 18 kilometers northeast of Gray and about 46 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the west of the department, on the western edge of the Vannon , opposite Membrey , north of the Saône valley .

The area of the municipal area of 9.39 km² covers a section of the central Saône valley. Vaite has only a small part of the Vannon valley. A short section of the river forms the eastern border. It flows with several turns through an approximately one kilometer wide flood plain south to the Saône. To the west, the community area extends over an approximately 20 m high steep slope onto the adjacent plateau, which is subdivided by several dry valleys. The plateau consists of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the Upper Jurassic . Agricultural use predominates both in the Vannon valley and on the plateau, which averages 235 m. In the far west the area extends into the forest of the Forêt de Dampierre . The southern boundary forms the height of the Haut-Bois , in which the highest elevation of Vaite is reached at 264 m. It descends with a steep slope to the Saône valley.

The neighboring municipalities of Vaite are Roche-et-Raucourt and Brotte-lès-Ray in the north, Membrey in the east, Savoyeux and Autet in the south, and Dampierre-sur-Salon in the west.

history

The municipal area of Vaite was settled very early, as the Roman road from Besançon to Langres ran here. Vaite is mentioned in a document in the 13th century. The place name changed over the course of time from Vayttes via Vaitte to the current name. In the Middle Ages Vaite belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule had been held by the Lords of Ray since 1320 , with Vaite forming a separate fiefdom. The village was sacked and pillaged by troops of the Duke von Zweibrücken in 1569. The former mansion was probably destroyed before 1626. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Vaite is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 villages .

Attractions

The Saint-Guérin chapel was built in 1747. Ecclesiastically, Vaite belongs to the parish of Membrey. The lavoir, which was once used as a wash house and cattle trough, dates from 1848. Its roof is supported by numerous pillars. The Mairie (parish hall) was built in 1899.

With 218 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Vaite is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly during the first half of the 20th century (342 people were counted in 1896), only relatively minor fluctuations were recorded in the last few decades.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time Vaite was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, a brick factory and the mining of iron ore were important. Today there are various local small-scale businesses, especially in the precision engineering and transport industries. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road from Gray to Combeaufontaine . Further road connections exist with Pierrecourt and Seveux .
