Theuley is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Theuley is located at an altitude of 213 m above sea level, twelve kilometers northeast of Dampierre-sur-Salon and about 27 kilometers west of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the west of the department, in the plateau landscape northwest of the Saône Valley , on the eastern edge of the Gourgeonne valley .
The area of the 7.50 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the plateau north of the Saône valley. The western border runs along the Gourgeonne, which provides drainage to the Saône. The flood plain averages 205 m and is a maximum of one kilometer wide. At the southern exit of the village there is a pond of more than 2 hectares. The community area extends eastward from the river to the adjacent plateau and into a dry valley that opens to the Gourgeonne. The plateau reaches an average height of 240 m. It consists of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the Upper Jurassic . Agricultural use is predominant in the valley and on the plateau. To the east the area extends into the Bois de la Vendue . The south-eastern demarcation is formed by the extensive forest of the Grand Bois de Theuley , in which the highest elevation of Theuley is reached at 262 m. It separates the valley of the Gourgeonne from the south adjoining Saône valley.
Neighboring communities of Theuley are Mont-Saint-Léger and Vauconcourt-Nervezain in the north, Grandecourt in the east, Vanne , Ray-sur-Saône and Tincey-et-Pontrebeau in the south and Lavoncourt in the west.
history
Various finds, in particular brick fragments, a Roman vase, a statuette and bronze medals, indicate an early settlement of the area. Theuley was formerly called Theuley-les-Ray and Theuley-les-Lavoncourt to clarify the distinction from Theuley-lès-Vars. The place name is derived from the Latin personal name Tullius and the suffix -acum and means something like court of Tullius . In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was always held by the lords of Fouvent . Together with Franche-Comté , Theuley finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Theuley is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 villages .
Attractions
The three-aisled Saint-Martin church was built in 1853 on the site of a chapel from 1776 and has an imperial style bell tower. There are five Calvaires in the village , a spring that is connected to the well (from 1820) and a lavoir from 1880, which once served as a wash house and cattle trough.

With 104 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Theuley is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. During the entire 20th century the number of inhabitants decreased significantly (in 1881 there were still 295 people). The population has increased since the beginning of the 21st century.
Economy and Infrastructure
Theuley was dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry until well into the 20th century. The hydroelectric power of the Gourgeonne was previously used to operate a mill. Today there are some local small businesses, especially in the wood processing industry. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the main D70 road from Gray to Combeaufontaine . There are other road connections with Mont-Saint-Léger, Grandecourt, Ray-sur-Saône and Tincey.
