Percey-le-Grand is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Percey-le-Grand lies at an altitude of 245 m above sea level, 24 kilometers northwest of Gray and about 41 kilometers northeast of the city of Dijon (as the crow flies). Percey-le-Grand is the westernmost municipality of the Haute-Saône department, on the eastern edge of the Vingeanne valley .

The area of the 13.88 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the plateau landscape north of the Saône basin. From north-west to south-east, the area is crossed by the Vingeanne valley, which creates numerous meanders and provides drainage to the Saône . The flood plain averages 240 m and is about one kilometer wide. The river is accompanied by the waterway of the Canal de la Saône à la Marne, which, however, runs just outside the municipal area.

The community area extends from the river to the northeast over the floodplain to the adjacent plateau, which reaches an average height of 300 m. The plateau consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the middle Jurassic period . The Montcierge (308 m) rises directly northeast of the village. The plateau is subdivided by various hollows that open to the Vingeanne valley. In the far north-east, the municipality extends to the Forêt des Louches . At 334 m, the highest point in the municipality is reached on a hill on the edge of the Bois de Percey-le-Grand .

Neighboring municipalities of Percey-le-Grand are Champlitte in the north, Orain in the east, Saint-Maurice-sur-Vingeanne and Chaume-et-Courchamp in the south and Cusey in the west.

history

Rich coin finds from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd centuries indicate that the area was settled in Roman times. Percey-le-Grand is mentioned in a document in the 12th century under the name Perciacum majorem . The spellings Perceium magnum , Perceyum grande , Pertiaco villa , Perce and Percey le grant have survived from a later period . The place name is derived from the Latin personal name Patricius and the suffix -acum , which means something like patrician homestead .

In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Champlitte always held local rule. Henri de Vergy had a castle built on Montcierge in 1255, of which hardly anything is visible today. Theuley monastery also had property and rights in the village. In 1445 the place was devastated by the Écorcheurs . Together with Franche-Comté , Percey-le-Grand finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Percey-le-Grand is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Percey-le-Grand, whose tower is equipped with a characteristic onion roof, was rebuilt from 1785 to 1790 and extensively restored in 1845. It houses furniture and paintings from the 18th century as well as a statue of the Madonna from the 17th century. Also worth seeing are the former grangie of Theuley monastery and various Calvaires at the entrance to the town.

Economy and Infrastructure

Percey-le-Grand is still today a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Champlitte to Sacquenay . Another road connection is with Saint-Maurice-sur-Vingeanne.
