Étuz is a French commune in the Haute-Saône department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the arrondissement of Vesoul and the canton of Marnay . It is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 localities .
geography
The village is located at an altitude of 218 m above sea level, about 16 kilometers north-northwest of the city of Besançon . Étuz extends in the south of the department, on the northern edge of the valley plain of the Ognon , opposite Cussey-sur-l'Ognon , southeast of the Monts de Gy.
The area of the 5.30 km² large municipal area includes a section of the lower Ognon valley. The southern border always runs along the Ognon. This flows here with several turns to the west through an alluvial plain that is one to two kilometers wide and averages 215 m. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the valley level to the adjacent plateau, which is made up of tertiary sediments . It is divided by the valley of the Ruisseau de la Douain , which flows into the Ognon a little below Étuz. The plateau is mostly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. At 267 m, the highest point of Étuz is reached in the far north.
Neighboring municipalities of Etuz are Montboillon and Cordonnet in the north, Boulot in the east, Cussey-sur-l'Ognon in the south and Chambornay-lès-Pin and Gézier-et-Fontenelay in the west.
history
Étuz is first mentioned in a document in 1203. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule was initially incumbent on the Lords of Arguel. In 1334 the area came into the possession of the cathedral chapter of Besançon. Together with the Franche-Comté , Étuz finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. After an iron mineral spring was discovered in 1845, bottling mineral water played an important role for a long time.
Attractions
The Sainte-Anne chapel was built in the 16th century on a hill east of the village. It houses an alabaster altar (16th century) from the Troyes school and statues of Saint Sebastian (16th century) and Saint Roch (17th century). Also worth seeing is the lavoir , which was built in 1842 according to plans by Pierre Marnotte and consists of two temples with 18 columns each.

With 563 inhabitants (1999), Étuz is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 170 and 220 people, there has been a strong population growth since the mid-1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has more than doubled.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Étuz was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are various local small business and retail businesses for daily needs. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.
The place is away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Besançon to Seveux . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 11 km away. Further regional road connections exist with Marnay and Voray-sur-l'Ognon .
