Autrey-lès-Gray is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the capital of the canton of Autrey-lès-Gray in the arrondissement of Vesoul .

geography

Autrey-lès-Gray is located at an altitude of 215 m above sea level, nine kilometers northwest of Gray and about 40 kilometers northeast of the city of Dijon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the far west of the department, in the plateau landscape northwest of the Saône valley , in the valley of the Soufroide.

The area of the 32.40 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the plateau northwest of the Saône valley. The central part of the area is occupied by the Soufroide basin, which provides drainage to the southeast to the Saône. The valley is at an average of 210 m and is around 500 meters wide. It is sunk about 20 m deep into the surrounding plateau.

The plateau consists of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the Upper Jurassic and the Tertiary . It is subdivided by various hollows that open up to the Soufroide valley. However, they do not show any surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. Agricultural use predominates on the plateau. At 254 m, the highest point of Autrey-lès-Gray is reached on a knoll north of the village. The community area extends to the south-west into the forest of Le Bouchot and with a long narrow tip far south, including the forest area of the Forêt d'Autrey (up to 248 m).

The hamlet of La Fontaine-à-l'Âne (233 m) on the plateau on the northern edge of the Forêt d'Autrey belongs to Autrey-lès-Gray . Neighboring municipalities of Autrey-lès-Gray are Saint-Seine-sur-Vingeanne , Fahy-lès-Autrey and Auvet-et-la-Chapelotte in the north, Bouhans-et-Feurg in the east, Poyans , Mantoche and Essertenne-et-Cecey in the South and Champagne-sur-Vingeanne and Broye-les-Loups-et-Verfontaine to the west.

history

Autrey was first mentioned in a document in 630 under the name Villa Alteriacum , when Amalgaire left the place to the Bèze monastery. The place name probably goes back to the Latin word altaria (altar) and indicates a place of worship from the Merovingian era . In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule had been held by the lords of Vergy from around 1160. At the instigation of Saint-Étienne de Dijon, the first church was built in 1156. The Autrey Priory is mentioned in a document in 1200. There was also a house of the Knights Templar here.

Together with Franche-Comté , Autrey finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. At the time of the French Revolution (1789) the neighboring village of Fahy-lès-Autrey was merged with Autrey-lès-Gray, but was separated again in 1821 and again raised to an independent municipality. A foundry shaped village life in the 19th century. At the end of the 19th century, Autrey-lès-Gray was connected to the French railways network with the opening of the railway line from Gray to Is-sur-Tille . Today Autrey-lès-Gray is the administrative seat of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Vallées, which comprises 14 villages .
