Autoreille is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Autoreille lies at an altitude of 272 m above sea level, four kilometers south of Gy and about 22 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, in a valley in the western area of the heights of the Monts de Gy .

The area of the municipality of 9.98 km² covers a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Saône and Ognon . The central part of the area is occupied by the hollow of Autoreille, which is mainly used for agriculture. It opens to the west to the valley of the Colombine , but shows no surface flowing water because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The hollow is flanked by the wooded heights of the Monts de Gy: Bois de Natoy (up to 370 m) in the north, Bois de Plumont (with 374 m the highest elevation of Autoreille) in the east, Grands Bois de Pin (up to 330 m) in the South-east and Bois de la Vergenne (357 m) in the south. In geological and tectonic terms, the Monts de Gy consist of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marly sediments that were deposited in the Middle and Upper Jurassic and Tertiary periods . The community area extends with a narrow tip to the east over the high plateau to the upper edge of the steep slope that leads to the valley basin of Fontenelay.

Neighboring communities of Autoreille are Gy in the north, Gézier-et-Fontenelay in the east, Pin , Courcuire and Avrigney-Virey in the south and Charcenne in the west.

history

Autoreille was first mentioned in a document in 1313. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and within it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Half of the local rule was incumbent on the lords of Gy and the lords of Rougemont. Together with Franche-Comté, Autoreille finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The village church of Autoreille was built in the 18th century. Next to the church is the lavoir, which was built in 1831 in a style reminiscent of antiquity. Only a few remains of the former manor house have survived.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Autoreille was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are various local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. Autoreille is the location of a karting track.

The place is away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the main road D12, which runs from Pesmes to Gy. Other road connections exist with Charcenne, Gy and Courcuire.
