Aulx-lès-Cromary is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Aulx-lès-Cromary is located at an altitude of 230 m above sea level, six kilometers south-southeast of Rioz and about 16 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department in the wide valley of the Ognon , which extends here with a large loop to the south, north of the ridge of the Fort de la Dame Blanche (Grande Côte).
The area of the 4.33 km² large municipality covers a section of the middle Ognon valley. The southern and eastern borders mostly run along the Ognon. This draws a large arc here and flows through an alluvial plain that is one to two kilometers wide and averages 220 m. Because of the high groundwater level, former sand pits are now filled with water and are used for various leisure activities. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the valley floor to the adjacent plateau, which is partly wooded, partly with arable land and meadow. It consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marly layers from the upper Jurassic period . At 273 m, the highest point of Aulx-lès-Cromary is reached here. To the west, the municipal soil extends over the plateau into the wooded valley cut of the Ruisseau de Malgérard , a right tributary of the Ognon.
Neighboring municipalities of Aulx-lès-Cromary are Chambornay-lès-Bellevaux in the north, Thurey-le-Mont in the east, Moncey , Venise and Palise in the south and Cromary and Sorans-lès-Breurey in the west.
history
Aulx is first mentioned in a document in 1229. At that time it was owned by the Bellevaux monastery . In the Middle Ages, Aulx belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Aulx-lès-Cromary is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 villages .
Attractions
The Château de la Vaivre in the Ognon Valley opposite Palise was built in the 16th century and was the residence of the Maréchal of Moncey. Various houses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center, which show the characteristic style of the Haute-Saône.

With 149 inhabitants (2005), Aulx-lès-Cromary is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (in 1906 there were still 128 people), the population has continued to grow steadily since the beginning of the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Aulx-lès-Cromary was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) until well into the 20th century. The exploitation of sand pits in the Ognon Valley has meanwhile been given up. Today there are various local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Rioz to Chaudefontaine. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 8 km away. Other road connections exist with Cromary and Cirey.
