Legambiente (in German: Environment League ) is an Italian environmental protection organization . It emerged in 1980 from a spin-off from the Associazione Ricreativa e Culturale Italiana . It was originally known as the Lega per l'Ambiente (in English: League for the Environment ), but changed its name to avoid confusion with other organizations.
Characteristics
With more than 115,000 supporters and around 1000 local groups, Legambiente is the most important environmental protection organization in Italy. It is recognized by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and is part of the European Environment Bureau and the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources . The organization largely dispenses with pyramid-shaped hierarchical structures , which means that the local groups are given a relatively large amount of leeway in their action planning.
In the 20 years of its existence, the Legambiente has organized a number of environmental campaigns in Italy ( Goletta Verde , Treno Verde and others), as well as targeted clean-ups. Among the latter, the campaigns Spiagge pulite (in German: clean beaches ) and Puliamo il Mondo (in German: We clean the world ) have become known.
Legambiente is active in the field of environmental education, mobilizing against smog and for a referendum against the civil use of nuclear energy . In addition, she takes action against the illegal building of houses and uncovered illegal landfills and other machinations of the eco-mafia .
In addition to these activities, Legambiente promotes the use of renewable forms of energy , more conscious energy consumption, respect for protected areas and the fight against the illegal waste trade . Every year the organization presents a detailed analysis of the state of the Italian environment ( Ambiente Italia ).
Legambiente has been supporting the Voler Bene all'Italia initiative since 2004 , which advocates the protection and enhancement of small communities with less than 5,000 inhabitants.
Legambiente publishes the monthly magazine La Nuova Ecologia (in German: The new environmental protection ).
Mobilization against nuclear power
On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred . In 1987, after protests, there was a referendum on nuclear power in Italy. The mobilization against nuclear power plants in Italy marked a turning point in the history of Italian environmental protection. Over a million signatures were collected for the referendum in just a few months, Legambiente and the WWF were able to double their membership and in the parliamentary elections of 1987 the Federazione dei Verdi received almost one million votes.
