Jussey Town Hall

Jussey is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the capital of the canton of Jussey in the arrondissement of Vesoul .

geography

Jussey is at an altitude of 223 m above sea level, about 30 kilometers northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-western part of the department, on the southern edge of the Amance valley , west of the Saône valley .

The area of the 33.55 km² municipal area covers a section of the undulating landscape west of the upper Saône valley. The central part of the area is taken up by the approximately 1.5 kilometers wide valley floor of the lower Mance, which averages at 218 m. The river flows into the Saône a little east of the town. This flows through a broad alluvial lowland to the southeast and marks the northeastern municipal boundary. To the north of the Mance, the parish soil extends to the La Caillouse hill (248 m).

To the south, the municipal area extends to the plateau of Les Grands Champs (260 m) and into the lowland of the Ougeotte , another right tributary of the Saône. This forms the southern border in sections. Agricultural use prevails here. The plateau consists of alternating layers of sandy-marly and calcareous sediments of the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). To the west, the plateau rises slightly and has some valleys that open towards the valley of the Ougeotte. The peaks of Le Pouligny (346 m), Moutherot (360 m) and La Bridelle , on which the highest elevation of Jussey is reached at 363 m, are placed on the plateau . These peaks are made up of a resistant layer of limestone from the middle Jurassic period .

In addition to the actual place, the following settlements belong to Jussey:

  • La Gare (220 m), train station settlement on the northern edge of the Mance valley
  • Noroy-lès-Jussey (300 m) on the southern slope of the Bridelle above the valley of the Ruisseau de Couaz

Neighboring municipalities of Jussey are Cemboing , Raincourt and Betaucourt in the north, Cendrecourt and Montureux-lès-Baulay in the east, Gevigney-et-Mercey and Bougey in the south and Montigny-lès-Cherlieu and Saint-Marcel in the west.

history

Various traces point to a settlement of the area in prehistoric times. There was a fortified storage area on the bridelle. Gallo-Roman mosaics were also found near Noroy. A Merovingian burial ground testifies to the settlement during this time.

Jussey is mentioned for the first time in 611 under the name Villa Jussiacus . The Luxeuil Monastery owned land here, which it ceded to the Cherlieu Monastery . In the Middle Ages, Jussey belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The Counts of Burgundy had owned the castle since the 12th century. The inhabitants of the medieval town were granted certain freedoms early on. The place was sacked in 1636 by troops under Marshal Turenne . Together with Franche-Comté, Jussey finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With the opening of the railway line from Vesoul to Langres , the place was connected to the French railway network in 1858. The area changed in 1972, when the previously independent Noroy-lès-Jussey (1968: 106 inhabitants) was incorporated into Jussey. Today Jussey is the administrative seat of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Jusséen comprising 17 villages .

Attractions

The Saint-Pierre church was rebuilt from 1750 to 1760. It has valuable furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries, including the main altar and paneling in the choir by Jean Gerdolle, various statues and the organ. The old town center is characterized by numerous town houses from the 16th to 18th centuries in the Spanish style. Particularly noteworthy are the Maison Cordienne and the Hôtel de Ville (town hall). On the Place de la Liberation is the Fontaine de la Marianne with an attached lavoir, which was once used as a wash house and cattle trough. Remains of a convent from the 17th century have been preserved. On the hill south of the village there is a statue of the Vierge de Pitié (17th century) and a 300 year old linden tree. A 1.2 km long avenue of plane trees leads from Jussey over the valley of the Mance to the train station.

The Church of Noroy-lès-Jussey is from the 19th century and includes a pulpit in the Louis XV style, and several statues from the 18th century. The chapel of Saint-Martin du Moutherot, which was built on the foundations of a Gallo-Roman manor, stands in the open field southeast of Noroy. Archaeological finds are on display in Jussey Town Hall.
