Fontenois-lès-Montbozon is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Fontenois-lès-Montbozon is located at an altitude of 265 m above sea level, three kilometers northwest of Montbozon and about 16 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The street village extends in a side valley of the Linotte north of the river valley of the Ognon , between the forest heights of the Mont d'Ormenans in the south and the Bois du Fays in the north.

The area of ​​the municipal area of ​​14.27 km² covers a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north-west. The central part of the area is crossed in an east-west direction by the Fontenois basin, which averages 260 m. The trough is drained to the west by the village stream to the Linotte. The basin is flanked by plateaus consisting of limestone layers from the Upper Jurassic period . They lie at 300 to 320 m and are partly wooded, partly with arable and meadow land. North of the village are the Bois du Fays (330 m) and the Beauregard (339 m). In the east and southeast, the area extends to the plateau of Montbozon, and in the south to the plateau of Mont d'Ormenans , on which the highest elevation of Fontenois-lès-Montbozon is reached at 348 m. To the west, the municipality extends over the approx. 500 m wide valley of the Linotte, the adjoining heights of the Bois de la Bouloie (up to 318 m) into the valley of the Filaine . This short right tributary of the Linotte forms the western boundary of the municipality.

Neighboring municipalities of Fontenois-lès-Montbozon are Dampierre-sur-Linotte in the north, Bouhans-lès-Montbozon and Thiénans in the east, Montbozon and Ormenans in the south and Roche-sur-Linotte-et-Sorans-les-Cordiers and Vy-lès- Filain to the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Fontenois-lès-Montbozon belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of ​​the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was incumbent on the von Fontenois family, mentioned in 1164 and extinct in the 13th century. Together with the Franche-Comté , Fontenois-lès-Montbozon finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. With the opening of the railway line from Besançon to Lure , the village was connected to the French rail network at the end of the 19th century. Today, however, the line is closed. Since 2000, Fontenois-lès-Montbozon has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Montbozon, which comprises 21 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Fontenois-lès-Montbozon was built around 1780. The wash house in the village center, which was built between 1830 and 1831 and has a domed roof with 16 columns, is worth seeing . Various houses from the 17th to 19th centuries in the characteristic style of the Haute-Saône have been preserved in the town center, including a building with a stair tower. In the Ormeau corridor there are remains (moats and ramparts) of a medieval castle.

With 328 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Fontenois-lès-Montbozon is one of the small communes of the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (476 people were still counted in 1896), slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Fontenois-lès-Montbozon was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Montbozon to Dampierre-sur-Linotte. Other road connections exist with Bouhans-lès-Montbozon and Sorans-les-Cordiers.
