Fretigney-et-Velloreille is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Fretigney-et-Velloreille is located at an altitude of 233 m above sea level, 14 kilometers northeast of Gy and about 28 kilometers north-northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the west of the department, in the Saône basin , in a wide hollow of the Dhuit, on the north-western edge of the hill country between Saône and Ognon .

The area of the 22.02 km² municipal area covers a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône . The area is naturally divided into two parts. The main part is taken up by the low relief Saône basin, which is made up partly of tertiary sediments, partly of younger deposits of the rivers, so-called alluvions . The area is drained by the Dhuits, which rises south of the village, flows through a wide basin and flows into the Romaine at the northern border of the municipality . The mainly agricultural valley is flanked in the east by the Bois des Vaivrottes . To the northwest, the municipal area extends to the plateau, which is on average 240 m and is occupied by the extensive forests of the Bois de l'Abbaye .

To the south and south-east the terrain gradually rises to the hilly landscape that lies between the river valleys of Saône and Ognon. From a geological point of view, this part consists of calcareous and sandy-marl layers from the middle and upper Jurassic period . In the south the area extends to the Bois du Vermot (384 m) with its Grotte de la Baume. The south-eastern demarcation runs along the Bois de Chanenot ridge , which leads to the Recologne high plateau. Here the highest point of Fretigney-et-Velloreille is reached at 403 m.

The municipality consists of the main town Fretigney (233 m) in the valley of the Dhuits, the hamlet Velloreille-lès-Fretigney (262 m) on the plateau west of the village and some farms. Neighboring communities of Fretigney-et-Velloreille are Vezet , Le Pont-de-Planches and Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité in the north, Bourguignon-lès-la-Charité , Maizières and Recologne-lès-Rioz in the east, Villers-Bouton , Oiselay -et-Grachaux and Frasne-le-Château in the south and Vaux-le-Moncelot and Les Bâties in the west.

history

The municipality of Fretigney was settled in prehistoric times. The earliest traces of human presence were found in the Grotte de la Baume : an engraved stone (head and chest of a horse) from the Magdalenian period .

Fretigney was first mentioned in a document as early as 937. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule was held by the Lords of Oiselay. Together with Franche-Comté , Fretigney finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1806, when Fretigney and the previously independent Velloreille-lès-Fretigney (1806: 83 inhabitants) were combined to form the new municipality called Fretigney-et-Velloreille. Since 2007 Fretigney-et-Velloreille has been a member of the Communauté de communes des Monts de Gy, which comprises 20 towns .

Attractions

The Saint-Julien church in Fretigney was rebuilt in 1759. It has an octagonal dome and has been classified as a Monument historique since 1988 . The furnishings include remarkable stucco altars from the 18th century, a pulpit in Louis XV style and various tombstones.

Also from the 18th century is a small castle that was the former seat of the abbots of Notre-Dame-de-la-Charité. In the village square there is a round fountain with a high column, which was built in 1884.

With 735 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Fretigney-et-Velloreille is one of the smaller municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had always fluctuated between 500 and 600 people in the first half of the 20th century, population growth was recorded during the 1960s. Since then, the total population has decreased again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Fretigney-et-Velloreille was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses, especially in the precision engineering and metalworking sectors . In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road D474, which leads from Gray via Gy to Vesoul . The village center is relieved of transit traffic through a bypass. Further road connections exist with Fresne-Saint-Mamès , Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin , Bourguignon-lès-la-Charité, Recologne-lès-Rioz, Oiselay-et-Grachaux and Les Bâties.
