Vezet is a commune Déléguée in the French commune of La Romaine with 192 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vezet is located at an altitude of 213 m above sea level, 2 km southeast of Fresne-Saint-Mamès and about 35 km north-northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the west of the department, in the Saône basin , on the northern edge of the Romaine valley . The valley is flanked on the north side by a plateau made up of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the upper Jurassic period . The fertile soils of the alluvial lowlands and the plateau are mainly used for agriculture.

Neighboring towns of Vezet are Soing-Cubry-Charentenay in the north, Noidans-le-Ferroux and Le Pont-de-Planches in the east, Fretigney-et-Velloreille , Les Bâties and La Vernotte in the south and Greucourt and Fresne-Saint-Mamès in the west .

history

Various finds indicate that the area of Vezet was already populated in prehistoric times. In the Middle Ages, Vezet belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . Vezet formed its own rulership, which was partly owned by the La Charité monastery and partly owned by a noble family named after the place. During the Thirty Years' War (especially around 1637), numerous villagers were killed by the troops of Duke Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar and carried off by a plague epidemic. Together with Franche-Comté , Vezet finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The rule of Vezet was elevated to a county in 1749. A large part of the village was destroyed in a major fire in 1788.

With effect from December 15, 2015, the former municipalities of Greucourt , Le Pont-de-Planches and Vezet were merged to form Commune nouvelle La Romaine. The municipality of Vezet belonged to the arrondissement of Vesoul and the canton of Fresne-Saint-Mamès .

Attractions

The village church of Vezet was rebuilt towards the end of the 18th century. It houses a wealth of furnishings , including furniture and altars from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as a statue of Saint-Gand (16th century).

Next to the church is the lavoir , which was also built at the end of the 18th century and served as a fountain, wash house and cattle trough. Its roof is supported by pillars.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vezet was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are various local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Fresne-Saint-Mamès to Fretigney-et-Velloreille. Further road connections exist with Les Bâties and Soing-Cubry-Charentenay.
