Brussey is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Brussey is located at an altitude of 214 m above sea level, 3 km east-northeast of Marnay and about 18 km west-northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, in the hollow of the village stream on the northern edge of the valley level of the Ognon , at the southern foot of the Monts de Gy .

The area of the 7.27 km² large municipal area includes a section of the lower Ognon Valley. The southern border mostly runs along the Ognon. This flows here with several turns through an alluvial plain , which has a width of about two kilometers and averages 205 m. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the valley floor and the adjacent, gently sloping slopes up, which form the southern foothills of the Monts de Gy. These hills are made up of tertiary sediments . While the areas near the valley are mainly used for agriculture, the ridge of the Bois de Fays is covered with forest. Here, at 336 m, Brussey's highest point is reached.

Neighboring municipalities of Brussey are Avrigney-Virey in the north, Beaumotte-lès-Pin in the east, Chevigney-sur-l'Ognon and Ruffey-le-Château in the south and Marnay in the west.

history

The remains of a Gallo-Roman settlement and various other finds point to a very early settlement of the municipality. Brussey was first mentioned in a document in 950. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Together with Franche-Comté , it finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 2002 Brussey has been a member of the community association Communauté de communes de la Vallée de l'Ognon, which comprises 15 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Maurice was rebuilt in the 18th century. It is richly decorated , including a crucifix from the 15th century as well as altars and pulpit from the time it was built.

A large mansion dates from the 16th century.

With 217 inhabitants (2004) Brussey is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (276 people were still counted in 1886), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Brussey was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration. Brussey is the site of a Maison de la Nature, which is located directly on the banks of the Ognon.

The place is away from the larger thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Marnay to Étuz . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 17 km away. Other road connections exist with Avrigney-Virey, Courcuire and Beaumotte-lès-Pin.
