Essertenne-et-Cecey is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Essertenne-et-Cecey is located at an altitude of 192 m above sea level, ten kilometers southwest of Gray and about 34 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Dijon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the far west of the department, in the valley basin of the Ruisseau d'Échalonge northwest of the Saône valley .

The area of the 11.30 km² municipality covers a section in the gently undulating landscape northwest of the Saône valley. From north to south the area is crossed by the Ruisseau d'Échalonge in an alluvial lowland. The river, which is dammed north of Essertenne to the Étang d'Échalonge , provides drainage to the Saône. The valley basin lies at an average of 190 m and has a width of around 500 meters. The eastern boundary is the Saône, which flows here through a wide alluvial plain.

The basin of the Ruisseau d'Échalonge is flanked by a gently undulating landscape, which mainly consists of tertiary sediments. Partly, calcareous layers from the upper Jurassic period also come to light. Agricultural use prevails here. Larger areas of forest lie along the municipal boundaries: in the north-east of the Bois de Mantoche , in the south of the Bois des Hautes-Meuzelles and in the north-west of the Forêt d'Autrey . To the west of the village is the Montsebaut hill (232 m). With a long narrow tip, the municipal area extends northward into the valley basin of the Ruisseau de l'Étang . At 246 m, the highest point in Essertenne-et-Cecey is reached on a hill near the Petit Colonge farmstead .

The double community consists of the districts of Essertenne west and Cecey east of the Ruisseau d'Échalonge and the settlement of Moulin Rouge (193 m) in the Saône valley. Neighboring municipalities of Essertenne-et-Cecey are Champagne-sur-Vingeanne and Autrey-lès-Gray in the north, Mantoche and Apremont in the east, Talmay in the south and Jancigny and Renève in the west.

history

The municipality was already settled in prehistoric times, as evidenced by traces from the Bronze Age and remains of a Roman traffic route. Essertenne was founded in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, the place belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Essertenne formed its own rule, which was dependent on the lords of Vergy. The Bèze monastery also had land ownership and rights in the village. Together with Franche-Comté , Essertenne and Cecey, which is mentioned in a document as early as 1048, finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

A blast furnace was set up at Ruisseau d'Échalonge as early as the 16th century, which was later supplemented with a forge and ironworks. This was in operation until 1877. In 1808, Essertenne and Cecey merged to form a double community. With the opening of the railway line from Gray to Saint-Jean-de-Losne, Essertenne-et-Cecey was connected to the French railway network in the second half of the 19th century. Since 2008, Essertenne-et-Cecey has been a member of the communal association Communauté de communes des Quatre Vallées, which comprises 14 villages .

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Essertenne-et-Cecey was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Later, the forge and ironworks determined village life. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the vicinity.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the D70 main road from Gray to Dijon. There are other road links with Pontailler-sur-Saône and Autrey-lès-Gray.
