Pontcey is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Pontcey is located at an altitude of 215 m above sea level, six kilometers southeast of Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin and about nine kilometers west of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in the basin of the Durgeon south of the Saône valley , on the eastern edge of the Bois des Minières .

The area of the 5.87 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the upper Saône basin. From southeast to northwest, the area is crossed by the basin of the Durgeon, which provides drainage to the Saône. The valley basin, which is 210 m on average, widens in the Pontcey area to form a basin around one kilometer in diameter. The Durgeon Valley is flanked on both sides by plateaus that reach a height of 250 m. These plateaus consist of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the upper Jurassic period . The fertile soils of the lowlands and plateaus are mainly used for agriculture. To the east of Durgeon rises the height of Mont Faut (up to 260 m). The southern boundary forms the forest height of Mont Vallery , on which the highest point of Pontcey is reached at 267 m. To the west, the community area extends into the extensive forest of the Bois des Minières (up to 260 m).

Neighboring communities of Pontcey are Chemilly and Vauchoux in the north, Montigny-lès-Vesoul and Chariez in the east, Boursières in the south and Aroz in the west.

history

Remains of a Gallo-Roman settlement point to a very early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages, Pontcey belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Chemilly held the local rule. The parish was always under the deanery of Scey-sur-Saône. Together with Franche-Comté , Pontcey finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Pontcey is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Combes, which comprises 22 villages .

Attractions

The Saint-Antide church was rebuilt in 1666 on the site of an earlier church. It has remarkable furnishings , including a richly carved altar (17th century) and pulpit, statues from the 16th century and various grave slabs.

Other sights include a calvary (17th century), a cross (18th century) in the cemetery and the stone bridge over the Durgeon, also from the 18th century.

With 252 inhabitants (2005), Pontcey is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (233 people were still counted in 1896), significant population growth was recorded during the 1980s. Since then, a downward trend has been observed again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Pontcey was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Vesoul area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Vesoul to Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin. Further road connections exist with Port-sur-Saône and Aroz.
