Boult is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Boult is located at an altitude of 245 m above sea level, seven kilometers southwest of Rioz and about 16 kilometers north of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, north of the valley of the Ognon in the broad basin of the Tounolle on the southern edge of the heights of the Bois du Chanois .

The area of the municipal area of 14.62 km² comprises a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north-west. The central part of the area is crossed from north to south by the valley of the Tounolle , which provides drainage to the Ognon. The Boult Mulde, which lies at an average of 260 m, is fertile thanks to its alluvial soils and is used intensively for agriculture. To the east, the terrain rises slowly and the community area extends to the wooded ridge (up to 315 m) that separates the valleys of Tounolle and Buthiers. These heights consist mainly of limestone layers from the Upper Jurassic period . In the north, the municipality extends into the vast wooded area of the Bois du Chanois . Boult's highest point is reached here at 351 m.

The hamlet of La Tounolle (235 m) in the valley of the stream of the same name belongs to Boult . Neighboring municipalities of Boult are Montarlot-lès-Rioz in the north, Sorans-lès-Breurey in the east, Voray-sur-l'Ognon , Bussières and Boulot in the south and Chaux-la-Lotière in the west.

history

The place name is derived from the old French word boul (birch). In the Middle Ages, Boult belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The Boult reign was first mentioned in 1140. It extended over several villages in the area. In 1535 the area came into the possession of Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle . Together with Franche-Comté , Boult finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the village was known beyond the region for its faience manufacture. Today Boult is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 villages .

Château de Boult

The Saint-Maurice church was built in the 18th century and has rich furnishings from that period.

The Château de Boult also dates from the 18th century . In the old town center, various houses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved, which show the traditional style of the Haute-Saône.

The lavoir , a former wash house and cattle trough, was built in 1820.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Boult was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are various local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Rioz to Étuz . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 14 kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Montarlot-lès-Rioz, Voray-sur-l'Ognon, Bussières and Chaux-la-Lotière.
