Villers-Bouton is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Villers-Bouton is located at an altitude of 330 m above sea level, eight kilometers west-northwest of Rioz and about 24 kilometers north of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, on a plateau in the hill country that extends between the Saône basin and the river valley of the Ognon .
The area of the 5.26 km² municipal area comprises a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the northwest. The central part of the area is occupied by the Villers-Bouton plateau, which is an average of 350 m. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land. The plateau is flanked in the southeast by the Les Aiguilles plateau (380 m) and in the west by the La Grande Plaine , on which the highest elevation of Villers-Bouton is reached at 421 m. In geological terms, the plateau consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the middle and upper Jurassic period , which are disturbed by several faults oriented in a south-west-north-east direction. There are no surface rivers here because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.
Neighboring communities of Villers-Bouton are Recologne-lès-Rioz in the north, Fondremand in the east, Cordonnet in the south and Fretigney-et-Velloreille in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Villers-Bouton belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Fondremand held local rule. Together with Franche-Comté , Villers-Bouton finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Villers-Bouton is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 localities .

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Villers-Bouton was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The place is off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Oiselay-et-Grachaux to Rioz . Further road connections exist with Recologne-lès-Rioz and Boult.
