Exaltation of the Cross Church

Chantes is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chantes is located at an altitude of 210 m above sea level, five kilometers southwest of Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin and about 16 kilometers west of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, slightly elevated on the southern edge of the Saône valley , which here draws a wide curve to the north, opposite Rupt-sur-Saône .

The 6.57 km² municipal area covers a section of the central Saône valley. The area is bordered to the east, north and west by the Saône, which forms a large loop here. It flows through a wide alluvial valley . The flood plain averages 202 m and has a width of around two kilometers. The river has been developed into a waterway, with the loops being cut off by side channels. The river banks in the Chantes area have therefore largely been preserved in a natural state, and the Saône forms small islands in several places.

From the plateau south of the Saône Valley, a spur protrudes into the river arch. It consists of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the Upper Jurassic period . The fertile soils of the valley and plateau are mainly used for agriculture. To the south, the municipal area extends into the extensive forest of the Bois de l'Abbé . At 262 m, the highest point in Chantes is reached here.

Neighboring municipalities of Chantes are Rupt-sur-Saône in the north, Ovanches in the east, Traves and Soing-Cubry-Charentenay in the south and Fédry in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Chantes was part of the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . The Lords of Rupt held local rule. To the southwest of the village, the Maltese had a commander built, which at the time was one of the most beautiful of the order (today the building is used as a farm). Together with Franche-Comté , Chantes finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Chantes is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Combes, which comprises 22 villages .

Attractions

The church ( Église de l'Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix ) of Chantes was built in the 18th century on the site of an earlier church, of which the Gothic choir is still preserved. Its remarkable furnishings include two statues of St. Pantaleon, paintings from the 18th century and a baptismal font from the 16th century.

With 119 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Chantes is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (279 people were counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chantes was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and fishing. Outside of the primary sector there are very few jobs in town. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is off the major thoroughfare on a department road that leads from Rupt-sur-Saône to Soing. Another road connection is with Traves.
