Sauvigney-lès-Gray is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Sauvigney-lès-Gray is located at an altitude of 198 m above sea level, eleven kilometers east of Gray and about 32 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, in the basin of the Saône , on the northern edge of the wide valley of the Morte and on the southern edge of the Forêt de Belle Vaivre.

The area of the 10.44 km² municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône . The area is bordered in the east by the Cabri and in the south by the Morte. This ensures drainage to the west to the Saône. Both flowing waters move through extensive lowlands that are more than a kilometer wide and averaging 198 m. The fertile alluvial soils are used for agriculture. To the northwest, the community area extends to the heights of the Forêt de Belle Vaivre, which are built up from tertiary deposits. The mostly sandy subsoil is covered by extensive forests (Bois de Sauvigney and Bois Blondel). At 248 m, the Bois Blondel is the highest point in Sauvigney-lès-Gray.

Neighboring communities of Sauvigney-lès-Gray are Beaujeu-Saint-Vallier-Pierrejux-et-Quitteur and Igny in the north, Angirey in the east, Choye and Saint-Loup-Nantouard in the south and Saint-Broing in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Sauvigney belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the Lords of Beaujeu. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name Sauvigney was first renamed Sauvigney-lès-Angirey in the 19th century and in 1914 Sauvigney-lès-Gray. Today Sauvigney-lès-Gray is a member of the communal association Communauté de communes du Val de Gray, which comprises 16 towns .
