Vougécourt is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vougécourt is located at an altitude of 258 m above sea level, 15 km north-northeast of Jussey and about 38 km north-northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the far north of the department, in the basin of the Ruisseau de la Courbe Saule , east of the Saône valley .

The area of the 8.88 km² municipal area covers a section in the gently undulating landscape east of the upper Saône valley. From north to south the area is crossed by the basin of the Ruisseau de Courbe Saule , which provides drainage over the Côney to the Saône. The floodplain is on average 240 m and has a maximum width of one kilometer.

The valley is flanked on both sides by a plateau, which mainly consists of Triassic shell limestone . In some places there is an alternation of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). The plateau is mainly used for agriculture. In the east, the community area extends into the forest of the Bois Barbey . At 311 m, the highest point of Vougécourt is reached on the hill west of the village. With a narrow tip, the municipality floor extends southwards into the broad valley of the Côney, which is accompanied by the waterway of the Canal de l'Est .

Neighboring municipalities of Vougécourt are Martinvelle and Passavant-la-Rochère in the north, Demangevelle in the east, Corre in the south and Montcourt and Ameuvelle in the west.

history

Finds from the Gallo-Roman period indicate a very early settlement of the area. Vougécourt is first mentioned in 1150 under the name Vigecurt . The names Vigecort (1215), Wegecort (1262), Wougeicort (1263) and Vugecort (1287) have been handed down from a later period . The place name is probably derived from the Germanic personal name Wicharius and the old French word cort (farmstead).

In the Middle Ages, part of Vougécourt belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and within it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Jonvelle held local control over this part. The other part belonged to Champagne. During the Thirty Years' War, the place was ravaged by troops of Duke Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar in 1636. It was not until 1678, when Franche-Comté finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen , that the two districts were united. Today, Vougécourt is a member of the community association Communauté de communes Saône et Coney, which comprises ten localities .

Saint-Jacques church

The three-aisled Saint-Jacques church originally dates from the 15th century, but was partially rebuilt from 1839 to 1843. The valuable furnishings include the richly carved wooden main altar with Corinthian columns (end of the 17th century), baptismal fonts from the 16th century and various statues and paintings (16th - 18th centuries).

The manor house dates from the 18th century.

The town center is characterized by various houses from the 17th and 18th centuries that show the traditional style of the Haute-Saône.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vougécourt was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, viticulture and cattle breeding). Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Corre to Darney . Other road connections exist with Demangevelle, Montcourt and Monthureux-sur-Saône .
