La Villeneuve-Bellenoye-et-la -Maize is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

La Villeneuve-Bellenoye-et-la-Maize is located at an altitude of 240 m above sea level, two and a half kilometers northwest of Saulx and about twelve kilometers north-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in the Saulx basin, in the basin of the Ruisseau du Bâtard , west of the course of the Durgeon river .

The area of ​​the 9.21 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of ​​the Saulx basin. From north to south the area is crossed by the lowland of the Ruisseau du Bâtard , which provides drainage to the Durgeon. This forms the eastern boundary in sections. In some places the area extends to the plateau east of the Durgeon. The alluvial lowland of the Durgeon averages 235 m and has a maximum width of 1.5 kilometers.

The valley is flanked by a plateau, which is subdivided by the valleys of various side streams. Agricultural use prevails here. To the south-west, the municipality extends over the valley basin of the Ruisseau des Grands Prés to the wooded peaks of the Bois des Charmes (283 m) and Bois de Chevaney . With a narrow tip, the municipality floor extends northwards over the slowly rising slope of the Bois de Montcharmon to the height of the Homme Dessus . At 396 m, the highest point of La Villeneuve-Bellenoye-et-la-Maize is reached here. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the terrain consists of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). Red sandstone and shell limestone from the Triassic period also come to light in some places .

  • La Maize (230 m) at the mouth of the Ruisseau des Grands Prés in the Durgeon

Neurey-en-Vaux and Meurcourt in the north, Mailleroncourt-Charette and Saulx in the east, Colombier in the south and Vellefrie and Vilory in the west are neighboring municipalities of La Villeneuve-Bellenoye-et-la-Maize .

history

The community area was settled very early. The Roman road from Besançon to Luxeuil ran through the area . Wall foundations of a Gallo-Roman property were discovered. In the Middle Ages, La Villeneuve belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of ​​the Bailliage d'Amont . The Counts of Burgundy handed over the local rule to Étienne d'Oiselay, which came from a side branch. As early as 1339, the residents were granted certain freedoms. The Knights Templar of La Villedieu also owned the area. Together with Franche-Comté , La Villeneuve finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1807 when the hamlets of Bellenoye and La Maize (then called La Maize-et-Bellenoye) were merged with La Villeneuve. Today La Villeneuve-Bellenoye-et-la-Maize is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Six Villages, which comprises six villages .

Attractions

The village church of Sainte-Catherine in La Villeneuve was rebuilt from 1778 to 1783 and has furniture and paintings from the 18th century. The Mairie (municipal administration) is housed in the former manorial chapel, which was built at the end of the 15th century. Also worth seeing is the fountain in the village square.

With 139 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), La Villeneuve-Bellenoye-et-la-Maize is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (314 people were still counted in 1881), population growth was observed again, especially during the 1980s. Since then, there has been another downward trend.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, La Villeneuve-Bellenoye-et-la-Maize was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The water power of the streams used to be used to operate several mills. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the agglomeration of Vesoul.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Saulx to Flagy . Other road connections exist with Colombier, Vilory and Mailleroncourt-Charette.
