Scye is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Scye is located at an altitude of 220 m above sea level, four kilometers south of Port-sur-Saône and about nine kilometers west-northwest of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in the valley of the Scyotte, east of the Saône valley , on the southern edge of the Bois du Four.

The area of the 5.84 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the central Saône valley. From east to west, the area is crossed by the Scyotte basin, which drains the river into the Saône. The approximately 500 m wide valley is flanked on both sides by plateaus that are around 250 m. These plateaus consist of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the upper Jurassic period . North of the Scyotte is the extensive wooded area of the Bois du Four (up to 265 m). The plateau south of the Scyotte Valley, on the other hand, is mainly used for agriculture. In the far east, the community area extends to the slope of Mont l'Essart , where the highest elevation of Scye is reached at 298 m.

Neighboring municipalities of Scye are Port-sur-Saône in the north, Grattery in the east, Montigny-lès-Vesoul in the south and Vauchoux in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Scye belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rulership was initially held by the von Traves and later by Scey . The local aristocratic family von Scye is first recorded in the 12th century and became extinct around 1400. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Scye is a member of the communal association Communauté de communes de la Saône jolie, which comprises 16 villages .

Attractions

The village church of Scye was largely rebuilt around 1850, with parts of the previous building from the 15th century, in particular the Gothic choir with frescoes from the 16th century. The rich furnishings include the baptismal font (15th century), altars and statues from the 18th century and various grave slabs.

The Calvaries from the 17th and 18th centuries are also worth seeing .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Scye was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are a few local small businesses, including a wood processing company. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Vesoul area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Port-sur-Saône to Montigny-lès-Vesoul. There are other road connections with Vauchoux and Grattery.
