Montboillon is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Montboillon is located at an altitude of 235 m above sea level, about 17 kilometers north-northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, north of the valley of the Ognon in a hollow at the confluence of the Ruisseau de Vau Venise and the Ruisseau de Pourcevie , at the eastern foot of the Monts de Gy .

The area of the 8.43 km² municipal area comprises a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north-west. The eastern part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is on average 250 m and is mainly used for agriculture. It is divided by the valley basin of the village stream of Montboillon. To the east it descends to the lowland of the Ruisseau de la Douain (right tributary of the Ognon).

The western part of the community has a much stronger relief. Here are the heights of the Monts de Gy, which are covered by extensive forests (the Grands Bois de Montboillon on the municipal area ). The valleys of the Ruisseau de Vau Venise and the Ruisseau de Pourcevie are sunk into these plateaus . At 372 m, the highest point in Montboillon is reached in the Grands Bois de Montboillon. In the far west, the community area extends into a basin in the area of the source of the Ruisseau de Poussot , which also feeds its water to the Ognon. While the Montboillon plateau consists of tertiary sediments , the Monts de Gy are made up of alternating layers of sandy-marly and calcareous layers from the Jurassic period .

The neighboring municipalities of Montboillon are Bucey-lès-Gy and Oiselay-et-Grachaux in the north, Bonnevent-Velloreille in the east, Étuz in the south and Gézier-et-Fontenelay in the west.

history

Remains of a Roman traffic route point to an early inspection and possible settlement of the municipality. In the Middle Ages, Montboillon belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . It formed its own small lordship, which was elevated to a barony in 1608. Together with the Franche-Comté , Montboillon finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Until his death under the guillotine in 1793, Montboillon was owned by Louis Marie Florent de Lomont d'Haraucourt, duc du Châtelet . Today Montboillon is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 villages .

Attractions

The village church of Montboillon was rebuilt in the 19th century. Various houses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center, which show the traditional style of the Haute-Saône. The Fontaine-Lavoir, which previously served as a fountain, wash house and cattle trough, was built in 1838. Its roof is supported by columns in the Doric style. Only the ruins of the former mansion are visible.

With 270 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Montboillon is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (221 people were counted in 1886), the population has continued to grow steadily since the early 1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montboillon was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Étuz to Fretigney-et-Velloreille . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 14 km away. Another road connection is with Gézier-et-Fontenelay.
