Lavoir and Church of Écuelle

Écuelle is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Écuelle is located at an altitude of 226 m above sea level, twelve kilometers north-northwest of Gray and about 45 kilometers northeast of the city of Dijon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the extreme west of the department, in the gently undulating landscape between the river valleys of Saône in the east and Vingeanne in the west, in the lowland of the Ruisseau des Écoulottes .

The area of the 5.56 km² large municipal area includes a section in the area of the plateau north of the plain of Gray. From north to south, the area is crossed by the wide valley low of the Ruisseau des Écoulottes (eastern source stream), which provides drainage to the Saône. The valley floodplain lies at an average of 220 m and used to form a moorland.

The valley is flanked on both sides by a plateau that reaches a height of about 240 m. It is divided by various hollows that open to the Ruisseau des Écoulottes . The plateau consists of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marly sediments from the Upper Jurassic and Tertiary periods . Agricultural use predominates in the valley and on the adjacent plateau, while extensive forest areas exist on the municipal boundaries. The northern boundary is the Forêt de Champlitte , the eastern boundary is the Bois de la Fresse (256 m). At 260 m, the highest point of Écuelle is reached on a knoll in the north-west.

Neighboring communities of Oyrières are Champlitte in the north, Framont in the east, Oyrières in the south and Vars in the west.

history

Remains of a Gallo-Roman villa indicate an early settlement of the area. The origin of Écuelle was a priory that was dependent on the Theuley monastery. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Secular rule over Écuelle was held by the Lords of Vergy, the Counts of Champlitte and the Counts of Vaudrey. In 1569 Écuelle was sacked by the Duke of Zweibrücken's troops and destroyed in 1595 by those under Tremblecourt. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since the beginning of 2008, Écuelle has been a member of the Communauté de communes des Quatre Vallées, which comprises 14 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Écuelle was rebuilt in the 18th century. The furnishings include a pulpit in Louis XV style .

Other noteworthy buildings are a former mansion and the lavoir from the 19th century, the roof of which is supported by twelve columns. In the Bois de la Gravotte there is masonry that probably belonged to a medieval castle.

With 70 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Écuelle is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (192 people were counted in 1881), slight population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Écuelle was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are individual businesses in local small businesses, including a wood processing company. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the larger towns in the Gray area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main D67 road from Gray to Langres . Further road connections exist with Vars and Framont.
