Poyans is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Poyans is located at an altitude of 204 m above sea level, nine kilometers west of Gray and about 36 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Dijon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the far west of the department, in the valley basin of the Ruisseau de Poyans .

The area of the 12.17 km² municipal area covers a section in the gently undulating landscape northwest of the Saône valley . From north to south the area is crossed by the Ruisseau de Poyans (also Ruisseau d'Échalonge ), which provides drainage to the Saône. The valley basin lies at an average of 205 m and has a width of around one kilometer. It is sunk about 40 m deep into the surrounding plateau.

The plateau consists of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marly sediments from the Upper Jurassic and Tertiary periods . It is subdivided by various hollows that open to the valley of the Ruisseau de Poyans . Agricultural use predominates in the hollow and on the plateau. At 248 m, the highest elevation of Poyans is reached at the height northeast of the village. The western boundary marks the forest of the Forêt d'Autrey . The community area extends to the south-east into the extensive forest of the Bois de Poyans (245 m).

Neighboring communities of Poyans are Autrey-lès-Gray in the south, west and north and Bouhans-et-Feurg , Nantilly and Mantoche in the east.

history

The municipality was settled very early, as evidenced by the remains of a Gallo-Roman building and a Burgundian burial ground. In the Middle Ages, Poyans belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule was held by the lords of Autrey-lès-Gray. Together with Franche-Comté , Poyans finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 2008, Poyans has been a member of the Communauté de communes des Quatre Vallées, comprising 14 localities .

Attractions

The Romanesque village church of Poyans originally dates from the 12th century, but was later redesigned several times; the facade received its present form in the 19th century. It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1960 . It has frescoes from the 15th century and a painted statue of St. Renobert (16th century). To the south of the church is a carved stone cross, which is dated to 1605. The lavoir, whose roof is supported by five columns, is also worth seeing. It was built in 1850, restored in 1984 and was once used as a wash house and cattle trough.

With 146 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Poyans is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (349 people were counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Poyans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Autrey-lès-Gray to Essertenne-et-Cecey . There are other road connections with Broye-les-Loups, Bouhans, Nantilly and Mantoche.
