geography
Vadans is located at an altitude of 203 m above sea level, eight kilometers north of Pesmes and about 35 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, east of the Saône plain in the lowland of the Résie stream between the vast forests of Gros Bois and Bois Dame .
The area of the municipal area of 12.95 km² covers a section of the gently undulating landscape between the valley plains of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north. From east to west the area is crossed by the Résie lowland, which drains the river to the Ognon. The lowland is approximately one kilometer wide and averages 200 m. The Ruisseau de Sainte-Cécile side stream enters the valley near Vadans. The valley is flanked on both sides by a plateau at an average of 220 m. It is made up of tertiary sediments and is partly used for agriculture, but mostly it is forest-covered. To the southeast, the community area extends into the Bois de la Fresse . The Bois Dame extends to the north . The highest point of Vadans is reached here at 243 m.
Neighboring municipalities of Vadans are Germigney and Le Tremblois in the north, Lieucourt and Valay in the east, Chevigney and La Grande-Résie in the south and Broye-Aubigney-Montseugny in the west.
history
Some finds indicate that the municipality of Vadans was already settled in the Neolithic . In the Middle Ages, Vadans belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rulership was held by the Lords of Pesmes. Ecclesiastically the place belonged to the Johanniter coming from Montseugny. Together with Franche-Comté , Vadans finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. With the inauguration of the railway line from Marnay to Gray in 1910, the village was connected to the French railway network. However, the line was stopped again. Today Vadans is a member of the communal association Communauté de communes du Val de Pesmes, which comprises 18 villages .
Attractions
The village church of Vadans was rebuilt in the 18th century. In an oratoire at the entrance to the village there is a statue of Christ from the 16th century. A mansion also dates from the 16th century. The remains of a medieval castle can be seen in the Bois Dame forest.

With 134 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Vadans is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (325 people were still counted in 1891), slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1990s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Vadans was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Valay to Broye. Other road connections exist with Chevigney, Germigney and Lieucourt.
