The Kakanui Mountains or Kakanui Range are a mountain range in the hinterland of Oamaru on the South Island of New Zealand . Administratively they belong to the Waitaki District , which is part of the Canterbury region in the west and the Otago region in the east .
It forms the boundary between the Waitaki River valley in the north and the Maniototo Plain , a plain in the southwest. The highest point is Mount Pisgah at 1,643 m.
The mountains are crossed by a road leading over the Dansey Pass settlement , the highest point of which is 935 m.
The southwest slopes of the Kakanui Range were an important gold field during the Otago gold rush of the 1860s. Relics from the gold rush can still be found at Kyeburn and Naseby .
