The Dansey Pass (often incorrectly referred to as Dansey's Pass or Danseys Pass ) is a mountain pass in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island .
geography
The pass is at 935 meters above sea level in the Central Otago District . The pass road connects the area around the upper reaches of the Taieri River , which is known as Strath Taieri , in the south with the plain around the Waitaki River in the north. The pass crosses the northern part of the Kakanui Mountains . This mountain range delimits the Maniototo plain from North Otago.
Although the route is not a major traffic artery, it is used to connect the villages of Naseby and Ranfurly in the south with the Mackenzie Basin in southern Canterbury . It can be used as an alternative route to part of the New Zealand State Highway 1 , which runs along the coast , and represents a detour of over 100 kilometers.
The village of Dansey Pass is approximately halfway between the top of the pass and the village of Duntroon to the northeast. What is confusing is that the original Dansey Pass Hotel was built on the west side of the pass.
