The Porters Pass is a 939 meter high mountain pass in the region Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .
The pass is located between Springfield and Cass in Korowai / Torlesse Tussocklands Park , west of Lake Lyndon . State Highway 73 runs over the pass . Porters Pass is the last on the southeastern route between the West Coast and Christchurch and the third highest point on the South Island expressway network after Lindis Pass and Milford Road . The Arthur's Pass , which lies along the same route, is indeed known, but some meters lower.
The pass was named in 1858 after the Porter brothers who ran a farm nearby.
