particularities

Glacial lake

Lake Lyndon is a small lake in the New Zealand Alps .

geography

The lake is located in the Canterbury region on the South Island of New Zealand , west of Porters Pass . The State Highway 73 goes past the lake at the end. To the east of the lake is the Korowai / Torlesse Tussocklands Park and the 1984 meter high Mount Lyndon is located west of the lake, while the 1998 meter high Castle Hill Peak is located north in the Torlesse Range .

Description and usage

The lake, which regularly freezes over in winter due to its altitude, is drained by the Acheron River , which in turn flows into the Rakaia River . The lake, which can be reached in about an hour from Christchurch, is known for fishing for rainbow trout .

Railway line

One of the route originally explored for the Midland Line railway would have left the now disused Whitecliffs Branch in Homebush and would have followed the east bank of the lake to Cass . The route actually built then follows a shorter path past the lake.
