The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) is one of eight New Zealand Crown Research Institutes , which has the task of providing research activities , expertise and publications to the New Zealand government, companies, institutions and the interested public in matters of sustainable management and resource-saving handling to advise nature.

According to its own information , the institute focuses on the earth's atmosphere and climate , energy , fresh water , biodiversity and nature conservation , natural disasters , ocean and coast , aquaculture and fisheries and, last but not least, takes care of the existence and development of Maori culture.

Like all government organizations, the NIWA has a Maori name: Taihoro Nukurangi . Taihoro stands for the flow and the movement of water. "Tai" means the coast and the tides and "horo" means quick movement. Nukurangi stands for the atmosphere as the interface between the sea and the sky.

Seat

The institute is headquartered in Auckland , with 14 other offices as branches with specific tasks spread across both main islands (from north to south: Bream Bay , Hamilton , Rotorua , Turangi , Napier , Wanganui , Wellington , Nelson , Greymouth , Christchurch , Tekapo , Lauder , Alexandra , Dunedin ).

history

In the 1980s, the New Zealand government began to restructure research and science. In 1989, the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology was created for this purpose with the aim of advising the government, preparing decision-making processes, prioritizing the allocation of funds and introducing success monitoring. But that's not all. The aim was to create individual institutes for different areas of responsibility that would operate independently and responsibly under government supervision, work with their own guidelines and rules, and carry out public and private-sector contracts based on success.

With the Crown Research Institutes Act 1992 , ten Crown Research Institutes were founded for this purpose, eight of which still exist today. The NIWA is one of them.

With the Companies Act 1993 , all institutions were converted into limited companies. Like all other Crown Research Institutes , the NIWA is now subordinate to the Crown Company Unit (controlling and advisory department) of the Ministry of Finance and the responsible Minister for Research, Science and Technology. Both ministers responsible are always registered as shareholders of the eight Crown Research Institutes .
