The Waitaki River is a river in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The river arises today at the outflow of the dam of Lake Waitaki and flows into the Pacific Ocean 67 km further east near Glenavy .

Before the construction of the Lake Benmore , Lake Aviemore and Lake Waitaki dams , the area of origin of the river was further northwest and the rivers, Ohau River , Pukaki River , Tekapo River and Ahuriri River were among its tributaries. But due to the construction of the reservoirs, which are directly lined up, the former river bed of the river is no longer recognizable and sunk in the floods of the lakes.

The middle of the river forms the political boundary between the Canterbury and Otago regions .

With its tributaries, which come primarily from the north-western Mackenzie Basin , the river has a water catchment area of 96,579 km 2 and a flow rate of around 392 m 3 / s.

use

The river is popular for recreation, fishing, and jet boating .
