The Ohau River is a river in the Mackenzie Basin in the Waitaki District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand that has been modified and impaired for electricity generation .

geography

The river is formed by the outflow of Lake Ohau and after around 12 km merges into Lake Ruataniwha, which is dammed up for power generation . After being used to generate electricity by the hydroelectric power station, Ohau B, the water from the reservoir is channeled to a second hydroelectric power station, Ohau C , and then discharged into Lake Benmore . A small part of the water of Lake Ruataniwha is channeled into the natural riverbed of the Ohau River . The river flows into Lake Benmore after another 13 km .

Before the construction of the hydropower plants on the river system of the Waitaki River , it was a tributary of the Waitaki River . It is part of the traditional border between the Otago and Canterbury regions .

The closest town is Twizel on Lake Ruataniwha .
