The power plant Ohau C ( English Ohau C power station ) is a hydroelectric plant on the South Island of New Zealand in the region Canterbury . The Ohau B power plant is located approximately seven kilometers northwest of Ohau C.
Construction work began in 1979. The power plant went into operation in 1985. It is owned and operated by Meridian Energy Limited .
Lake Ruataniwha and canals
Ohau C power plant uses the water from Lake Ruataniwha to generate electricity. From the lake, the 2.4 km long Ohau B Canal leads in a south-easterly direction to the Ohau B power plant . After the water passes the power station, it flows through the eight kilometer long Ohau C Canal . The water from the canal is then fed through four penstocks to the power plant building at Ohau C. The drop height is 47.5 m. After the water passes the power plant, it flows into Lake Benmore .
The normal storage target of the lake is 458.8 m (maximum 460 m at high tide), the minimum at 458 m. At the lake there is a weir about 200 m north of the canal . A maximum of 1700 m³ / s can be discharged via the weir, which is then diverted into the otherwise dry Ohau River .
Another weir is 1.6 km below Ohau B. If the Ohau C power station has to be shut down, the water from the Ohau C Canal can be diverted into the Ohau River via this weir.
power plant
The Ohau C power plant has an installed capacity of 212 (or 222) MW . The average annual generation is 958 (or 970) billion kWh. The four Francis turbines have a maximum output of 55.5 MW each. The generators have a nominal voltage of 11 kV .
