Meridian Energy was incorporated on December 16, 1998 under the name Hydro Energy Limited and renamed Meridian Energy Limited on March 17, 1999 .
The company, although only 51.02% owned by the New Zealand state, is run as a state-owned enterprise by The Treasury , the New Zealand Ministry of Finance. Another 24.25% is owned by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand through New Zealand Central Securities Depository Limited, and the remaining shares are distributed through eight other companies.
Meridian Energy is traded in a variety of products on the NZX Equity Market (NZSX) of the New Zealand Exchange .
