The power station Tekapo B ( English Tekapo B Power Station ) is a hydroelectric power station in the Mackenzie District of the Canterbury region on the South Island of New Zealand . It is located on the east bank of Lake Pukaki . The Tekapo A power plant is located approx. 25 km northeast of Tekapo B.

The power plant went into operation in 1977. It is owned and operated by Genesis Energy Limited (GE) and is also operated by GE.

Tekapo Canal

The Tekapo B power plant uses the water from Lake Tekapo to generate electricity. From Lake Tekapo, the water is first directed to the Tekapo A power plant . After the water has passed Tekapo A, it flows over the Tekapo Canal (length 25.5 km, capacity 130 m³ / s) to the Tekapo B power station. Approximately 1 km from Tekapo B, the canal flows into a reservoir, two of which Lead pressure pipes to the power plant's machine house.

In September 2012, GE began rehabilitation of the sewer as it had been known to have leaks for years. In the summer of 2013, two sections of the sewer were lined with a PVC film and thus sealed. In the summer of 2014, another section with a length of 1.8 km was renovated in the same way. The total cost of the renovation was estimated at NZD 145 to 155 million in 2013 .

The machine house of the Tekapo B power plant is located in a recess on the eastern bank of Lake Pukaki . It reaches a height of 46 m, 2/3 of which are below the waterline. In the machine house there are two Francis turbines with an output of 77 and 80 MW respectively . The average annual production is 840 million kWh. The machine house is connected to the switchgear via a 74 m long walkway.

owner

On June 1, 2011, GE acquired the Tekapo A and B power plants from Meridian Energy Limited for nearly NZD 821 million . This was preceded by a government decision on December 15, 2009 to transfer the power plants in order to increase competition on the electricity market.
