The Benmore Power Plant ( Benmore Hydro Station ) is a run-of-river power plant on the South Island of New Zealand . The power plant is one of eight power plants under the Waitaki Hydro Scheme , a large-scale hydropower project in the Canterbrury region .

geography

The power plant is located 85 km west-southwest of Timaru and 85 km northwest of Oamaru between the reservoirs of Lake Aviemore in the southeast and Lake Pukaki in the north.

history

The dam project for the damming of the lake began in 1958. At this time, the settlement Otematata , which means "place of a good flint stone " in the Māori language , was built. Today it is still 5 km south of the power plant, on the narrow part on the southwest side of Lake Aviemore . The site was built for workers building the Lake Aviemore and Lake Benmore dams , and at its peak in 1963, it was home to over 4,000 residents. Many houses were later sold as holiday accommodation. In 1962, 160 heavy construction machines were employed in 1240 workers building the dam.

After the dam and the power station were completed, the damming of the lake began, which was completed in December 1964. The power plant's first generators were then put into operation in January 1965 and the power plant was officially inaugurated three months later, on May 15, 1965 by the then Prime Minister of New Zealand, Keith Holyoake . In 2008 the power plant was overhauled for NZ $ 67 million  .

As of 2020, the Benmore power plant will be operated by the majority state-owned company Meridian Energy Limited .

Barrier structure

The 110 m high barrier structure consists of a gravity dam built from earth material with a crown length of 823 m and a gravity dam made of concrete with the pressure pipelines to the power plant, with a crown length of 122 m. The width of the dam is 490 m at its base and 10.6 m at the top. The machine house is on the right side of the dam and the flood relief is on the left . A maximum of 5,100 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief.

The embankment made of earth material is the largest of its kind in New Zealand. Its core consists of a water-impermeable, clay-like material, while the flanks are filled with gravel and stones on the lake side and the drainage side . The volume of the dam is 12 million m 3 of earth and almost 400,000 m 3 of concrete.

The fall height is 92 m.

power plant

The Benmore power plant has six generators driven by Francis turbines, each with 90  MW and a nominal voltage of 16  kV, with an installed capacity of 540 MW. The average annual electricity generation is 2215 GWh. The nominal speed of the turbines, which were supplied by DePretto Escher Wyss , is 166.7 / min. The generators come from General Electric .

Below the dam is the converter station of the HVDC Inter-Island Link , which connects the power grids of the South and North Islands of New Zealand.

The power plant is after the power station Manapouri is the second largest hydroelectric power plant in New Zealand.

Reservoir

With the completion of the barrier structure, the reservoir called Lake Benmore was dammed. The lake, which extends over an area of 74.5 km 2 , has a targeted storage target between 355.25 m and 361.45 m.
