The lake ruataniwha is a reservoir in Mackenzie Basin on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The lake is 2 km south of the town of Twizel on the traditional border of the Canterbury and Otago regions . It was created as part of a hydropower project on the Ohau River . The Māori gave the lake its name Ruataniwha ("two Taniwha ") after these beings from their mythology.

Rowing course

Lake Ruataniwha is one of the most important rowing routes in New Zealand. The rowing course was already marked and anchors were attached for the marker buoys before the lake was flooded. This and other work to prepare the rowing course was actually not part of the hydropower project. They were carried out at the instigation of project engineer Max Smith . This work, originally intended as a public service, sparked a controversy that led to his early retirement.

Every other year the Maadi Cup , the school rowing championships for under 18-year-old high school students, takes place on the track.

Power plants Ohau A, B and C

Lake Ruataniwha was created from the construction of a dam between 1978 and 1981 to supply the Ohau B and C power plants with water. The New Zealand State Highway 8 runs over this dam.

From 1971 to 1979 the Ohau A power plant was built, which is supplied with water from the lakes Lake Ohau and Lake Pukaki via canals . After the water passes Ohau A, it flows into Lake Ruataniwha. The Ohau B and C power plants were built between 1977 and 1985. They are supplied with water from Lake Ruataniwha via a canal.
