The power plant Tekapo A ( English Tekapo A Power Station ) is a hydropower plant in the Mackenzie District of the Canterbury region on the South Island of New Zealand . The Tekapo B power plant is located approx. 25 km southwest of Tekapo A.

Construction work began in 1938. The power plant was originally supposed to be completed in 1943, but work was interrupted between 1942 and 1944 due to World War II. The power plant then went into operation in 1951. It is owned and operated by Genesis Energy Limited (GE) and is also operated by GE.

Lake Tekapo and Tekapo River

The Tekapo A power plant uses the water of Lake Tekapo to generate electricity. A tunnel (length 1.4 km, diameter 6 m) leads from Lake Tekapo in a south-westerly direction and ends in a moated castle , from which a pressure pipeline leads to the machine house. The height of fall is 30.5 m. After the water has passed the power plant, it flows over the Tekapo Canal (length 25.5 km, capacity 130 m³ / s) to the Tekapo B power plant .

The reservoir targets of the lake vary depending on the season: the minimum retention target is 701.8 m, the maximum is 710.9 m above sea level . About 200 m from the lake shore there is a weir ( Lake Tekapo Control Structure or Gate 16 ) on the Tekapo River , which limits the outflow from the lake. A maximum of 850 m³ / s can be discharged. The SH 8 runs over the weir . Around two kilometers below Gate 16 there is another weir ( Gate 17 ), which dams the Tekapo River into a small lake ( Lake George Scott ). Water can be channeled through Gate 17 into the Tekapo Canal or the otherwise dry Tekapo River.

power plant

The Tekapo A power plant has a Kaplan turbine with an output of 25  MW . The average annual production is 160 million kWh.

owner

On June 1, 2011, GE acquired the Tekapo A and B power plants from Meridian Energy Limited for nearly NZD 821 million . This was preceded by a government decision on December 15, 2009 to transfer the power plants in order to increase competition on the electricity market.
