The power plant Ohau B ( English Ohau B power station ) is a hydroelectric plant on the South Island of New Zealand in the region Canterbury . The municipality of Twizel is about three kilometers north of the power plant. The Ohau A power plant is located about six kilometers northwest of Ohau B, the Ohau C power plant about seven kilometers southeast.
Construction work began in 1977. The power plant went into operation in 1984. It is owned and operated by Meridian Energy Limited .
Lake Ruataniwha
The Ohau B power plant uses the water from Lake Ruataniwha to generate electricity. A 2.4 km long canal leads from the lake in a south-easterly direction to the power station. The water from the canal is then fed through four penstocks to the power plant's machine house. The drop height is 47.5 m. After the water has passed the power plant, it flows through another channel to the Ohau C power plant .
The normal storage target of the lake is 458.8 m (maximum 460 m at high tide), the minimum at 458 m. At the lake there is a weir about 200 m north of the canal . A maximum of 1700 m³ / s can be discharged via the weir, which is then diverted into the otherwise dry Ohau River .
power plant
The Ohau B power plant has an installed capacity of 212 (or 222) MW . The average annual generation is 958 (or 970) billion kWh. The 4 Francis turbines have a maximum output of 55.5 MW each. The generators have a nominal voltage of 11 kV .
