The upper course lies on the eastern flank of the Southern Alps . The river flows 70 km through the southernmost part of the Mackenzie Basin before it reaches Lake Benmore , one of the reservoirs of the hydropower project on the Waitaki . It unites here with the Waitaki, which eventually flows into the Pacific .
Shortly before its confluence with the lake, the New Zealand State Highway 8 crosses the river, the State Highway 83 approximately follows the middle and lower reaches of the Ahuriri. The place Omarama is about 6 km west of the mouth. It is the only place on the river.
