Omarama is a village in the Waitaki District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The name of the village is made up of the Māori terms " O " for "place" and " marama " for "moonlight" or "light".

geography

The village is located around 70 km east-northeast of Wanaka and around 106 km northwest of Oamaru , at the southern end of the Mackenzie Basin , in the wide valley of the Ahuriri River , which flows into Lake Benmore around 8 km east . South of the village rise to 1558  m high Cuthbert Range and east to northeast the up to 1894  m high Benmore Range . In the southwest are the Dunstan Range with the famous Lindis Pass . The closest place is Twizel , around 27 km north of the village.

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 267 inhabitants, 15.7% more than in the 2006 census.

economy

Omarama is a farm where agriculture with sheep breeding is of great economic importance. Just outside the village is the Tara Hills Research Station . It is a branch of the AgResearch Invermay Agriculture Center based in Mosgiel .

Omarama is located at the intersection of New Zealand State Highway 8 with New Zealand State Highway 83 , which branches off from the former in the village.

Education

With the Omarama School, the settlement has a primary school with grades 1 to 8. In 2012, 35 students attended the school.

Sports

Is known Omarama especially for his Segelfluggelände and excellent soaring conditions for the region. Thermics can carry gliders up to an altitude of 15 km. Due to the ideal conditions, Omarama is also the place for international gliding competitions. In 1995 the world championship in gliding took place in Omarama .
