Calmoutier is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Calmoutier is located at an altitude of 278 m above sea level, about ten kilometers east-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in the valley of the Colombine , which is sunk into the surrounding plateaus.

The area of the municipality of 14.04 km² covers a section in the undulating landscape between the basin of Vesoul in the west and the plain of Lure in the east. From northeast to southwest the area is crossed by the alluvial lowland of the Colombine, which provides drainage to the Durgeon . The river draws several valley meanders. The valley is at an average of 270 m and has a maximum width of 500 meters. Agricultural use prevails here.

The valley is flanked on both sides by relatively steep, approximately 60 m high slopes, which lead to the adjacent, partly wooded, partly meadowland heights. On the northwest side of the valley are the heights of the Bois du Mont Aubry and the Bois de Saulx . The forest of the Bois de Calmoutier extends south of the village , in which the highest point of Calmoutier is reached at 390 m. To the east, the community area extends over an undulating plateau, which is subdivided by various hollows and dry valleys . It is made up of a resistant layer of limestone from the middle Jurassic period . There are karst phenomena here, particularly caves and shafts, including the Combe l'Épine . In the far east, the municipal soil extends to the headwaters of the Ruisseau de Lauzin .

Neighboring municipalities of Calmoutier are Saulx and Colombotte in the north, Velleminfroy and Liévans in the east, Noroy-le-Bourg and Dampvalley-lès-Colombe in the south and Montcey in the west.

history

Remains of a Roman traffic route indicate an early settlement of the area. The origin of Calmoutier was formed by the foundation of a monastery at the beginning of the 9th century, whose monks made the area arable. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . During the Thirty Years War, Calmoutier was looted and burned to the ground in 1636, and the monks fled to Vesoul. Together with Franche-Comté , the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Calmoutier is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Grands Bois, which comprises 12 localities .

The church was originally built in the Romanesque style, but later changed several times and partially rebuilt. The facade and choir show Gothic styles, while the nave dates from the 17th century. The valuable church furnishings include statuettes of the apostles (15th century), paneling and statues from the 17th century, furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries. Century and a richly carved pulpit .

The neo-Gothic Chapelle de la Côte (built in 1854) is reminiscent of a cholera epidemic from around 1850. The town center is characterized by numerous houses from the 16th to 18th centuries, which show the traditional style of the Haute-Saône. Other sights include the remains of the monastery, a stone bridge over the Colombine and the lavoir built in the 19th century with its five arches. It was once used as a wash house and cattle trough.

With 266 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Calmoutier is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (587 people were still counted in 1881), slight population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Calmoutier was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The water power of the Colombine was formerly used to operate mills. Today there are some local small businesses, including a quarry company. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the agglomeration of Vesoul.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N19, which runs from Vesoul to Belfort . The village center is relieved of through traffic by a bypass. Further road connections exist with Saulx and Noroy-le-Bourg.
